Co-Occurring Disorders

Co-Occurring Disorders

“We are able to accept patients with co-occurring disorders including complicated medical problems and psychiatric diagnosis with chemical dependency. Our philosophy is to medically detox our patients in order to fully assess the true diagnosis after the patient is completely chemical free.”

Dual diagnosis is a factor in addiction treatment.  Symptoms of addiction often mimic numerous other mental health diagnosis.  With denial as a predominate characteristic, persons with drug & alcohol problems find difficulty in providing accurate Biopsychosocial health histories to their Healthcare Providers.  This pattern can lend itself to mis-diagnosis. The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous states, “We know but few instances where we have given…doctors a fair break.  We have seldom told them the whole truth…”

Willingway Hospital addresses the occurrence of dual diagnosis by assessing the alcohol and drug history, mental health diagnosis, and Family of Origin heredity/history.  During the intensive inpatient program, the focus is to help patients establish a true mental health and chemical free baseline.  This approach allows patients and clinical staff the opportunity to more accurately partner with one another in understanding their mental health and substance abuse issues.

Treatment and Continuing Care Recommendations are based solely on providing patients with the best possible chances for solid recovery from alcoholism & drug addiction as well as maintain the best possible mental health stability.

Willingway’s Medical Director is an ASAM certified psychiatrist with extensive experience in assessing co-occurring disorders and addiction treatment.
