Statesboro Herald, August 2008 The Willingway Foundation, the non-profit charitable extension of Willingway Hospital, has established a fund to offer service awards to recovering Georgia Southern University students. The fund will be available to GSU students who are actively enrolled at the Georgia Southern University Center for Addiction Recovery and meet the eligibility requirements for a service award, which include at least one year of consecutive sobriety, an active leadership/service position in the recovery community, and who maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Kristen Harper, Coordinator for the Center for Addiction Recovery states, “A service award does not just pay for someone's books or courses, it helps support the student's educational, personal and professional goals while they attempt to navigate through the temptations of a typical college environment.” As of January 2009, four service awards of $1,000 each have been awarded. “This fund is a means by which the Foundation can help carry on the legacy of helping others,” states Dr. Bobby Mooney. “Our parents (Dr. John and Mrs. Dot Mooney) would want this fund to go to a student who is earnestly trying to recover, and who might not have all of the means necessary to attend college.” The Willingway Foundation has retained Rick Robins to spearhead fundraising efforts to support such projects, and has also expanded its Board of Directors to include Bryan Brice, Earl Dabbs, Max Manack, Joel Mills and Jordana York. We want to enlist the help of our friends and alumni to support this worthy cause, and assist students working in their recovery. Contributions may be made to The Willingway Foundation, 311 Jones Mill Road, Statesboro, GA 30458. For more information, please contact Rick Robins at (912) 481-1550. |
