Signs of Addiction

Whether it's various types of drugs or alcohol, there are seven common symptoms of problem usage that can tell family or friends there may be a problem:

1. Change in school or work attendance or performance.
2. Alteration of personal appearance.
3. Mood swings or attitude changes.
4. Withdrawal from responsibilities/family contacts.
5. Association with drug- or alcohol-using peers.
6. Unusual patterns of behavior.
7. Defensive attitude concerning drugs or alcohol.

It's important to realize that some symptoms of chemical dependency closely mirror those of depression or other medical conditions.  That's why the detoxification process at Willingway is so important: getting the patient chemically free so that a true diagnosis of underlying conditions may be made is essential.
For specific symptoms relative to various types of drug use, be sure to review the material under the Drug Addiction Treatment page.

If you have any concerns about your own drug or alcohol usage or those of a family member or friend, call the team at Willingway.  We would be happy to talk with you about your concerns and answer your questions.  Someone is available 24 hours a day on our admissions line at 800.242.9455.
